Managing Security and Reputational Risks from Leaderless Protest Movements
In this article, James Lawrence of Peregrine Risk Management, joins with the Risk Assistance Network & Exchange (RANE) to offer best practices for organizations to assess, understand, and mitigate the risks from leaderless protest movements.
Extinction Rebellion, Antifa, pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, the yellow vest protests in France, Black Lives Matter, and hundreds of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol on 6 January. While representing a vast range of goals and ideologies, these movements have one key characteristic in common: They are largely leaderless and consist of a diffuse, grassroots, and flexible collection of participants who mobilize quickly across geographic areas. Understanding, tracking, and responding to these leaderless protest movements presents particular challenges to businesses who may find themselves either specifically targeted by demonstrations or online campaigns, or at risk based on physical proximity to areas where unrest occurs. Here, RANE experts Bill Coletti, Founder and CEO of Kith, and James Lawrence, Co-Founder and Director of Peregrine Risk Management, offer best practices for organizations to assess, understand, and mitigate the risks from these movements.
